Electro-chemical energy sources new R&D trends

Within the nowadays civilization challenges, energy is the most important, from the research point of view as well as in technological developments. The relation trinity energy-materials-information (EMI) is directly correlated with the triad of the synthesis (the technological process of materials obtaining-structure-material properties (SSS)). The energy storage is an important issue and a weak point in the energy sector. Fossil fuels provide the own energy storage what is not the case for wind, solar, and other energies. The materials nanostructure can be a useful for the heat storage or for the heat storage isolation. Electrochemical energy storage is widely applied, especially in portable devices, which are mainly related to the battery. Li is the most used because it is the lightest metal and has a very high energy density. The lack of lithium existing in the United States, and the world, so, the new research replace lithium by magnesium ions, for battery systems. These studies are in development at the Illinois State University, in Chicago and we are beginning with them cooperation on this field. Unfortunately all rechargeable cathode classes: LiCoO2, LiNiO2, LiMn2O4, have a core problem of costs and environmental impact, because their cathodes include the use of rare metals such as redox center. The problems become more serious, especially for the most expensive LiCoO2, with further electric vehicles market expansion, what is on the way in the near future.
