Calcium hydroxide is certainly one of the most studied dental materials. It has been used a "golden stanard" for all pulp treatments due to the fact that it stimulates the formation of reparative and sclerotic dentin; protects the pulp from thermal stimuli and it has an antibacterial effect. Calcium hydroxide is a medication of choice in the treatment of the deep caries lesions, as well as in the case of micro perforation of the pulp that is not clinically visible.There is a whole series of calcium hydroxide based preparations that are recommended as the safe protection of the most andangered parts of the pulp in deep cavites, such as: Calxyl, Calcipulp, Drala-pulp, Reocap, Dropsin, Dycal, Vitapulp and Pulpadent. Calcium hydroxide- based preparations may take the form of a suspension, a powder of hard -binding dental cements obtained by mixing the same amounts of the base and the catalyst. Preserving the vitality and function of the pulp is the primary goal of deep caries therapy. The pulp has a significant reparatory potential that can be stimulated by an effect of certain medicaments such as medicaments based on calcium hydroxide. Regardless of the great progress of modern dentistry and the large number of medicaments currently used in the treatment of caries, deep caries therapy is still a complex and complicated process whose success is the in the function of a large number of factors.
