In order to become more attractive in the market, manufacturers try to make it safer vehicles. A lot of programs launched (eg. Euro NCAP, USNCAP, ANCAP, JNCAP etc.), in order to evaluate the safety of new vehicles. The main disadvantage of these programs is that results in controlled conditions do not have to be valid in real-life situations. On the other hand, it's also a fact that drivers feel their vehicle safe. The mass and age of the vehicle are recognized in the literature as variables that have a significant impact on vehicle safety. Namely, increasing vehicle mass generally decreases the risk of injury to the driver of a given vehicle in the event of a crash. Also, for each new year of the vehicle,
the risk of involvement in a traffic accident increases by 1.5%. For this reasons, this paper examines the influence of mass, age and size of the vehicle on driver’s subjective perceptions of vehicle safety. The results obtained by factor and regression analysis show that drivers are not aware of the impact of the observed characteristics of the vehicles on their safety. This data indicates that it is necessary to implement measures that will raise the awareness of the population about the impact of vehicle characteristics on road safety.
